Sample Curriculum Design and Teaching Projects
Sir Sandford Fleming College, Peterborough, ON, Canada
I have done a variety of part-time/occasional projects for Fleming. I designed a curriculum for a start-up EAP program primarily for students entering programs in applied sciences, ICT, hospitality, business, healthcare and more. I've delivered a teacher training course to visiting teachers from Panama. I've taught various courses in EAP and ESP (Science, Hospitality). Finally, I've developed workshops on academic integrity for faculty.
Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Regina, SK, Canada
I developed a new EAP course with a strong focus on Canadian studies, intercultural communication and workplace English, along with general language skills. As part of this project, I wrote a large amount of custom material designed to prepare students for postsecondary study.
Coast Mountain College (formerly Northwest Community College), Terrace, BC, Canada
I designed the curriculum for a new EAP program in a remote part of British Columbia. This was a fantastic project that involved the writing of a substantial amount of subject- and region-specific material. This project led to the writing of College Skills: Intermediate English for a different target audience.
TeachAway, Toronto, ON, Canada
I wrote a course in Teaching Writing for Chinese in-service teachers studying at Beijing Normal University.
Mount Royal University, Calgary, AB, Canada
I designed and wrote modules for Mount Royal University's online Teaching English as a World Language course. I also taught at Mount Royal in the mid-1990s, back when it was a college.
University of Warwick, Coventry, UK
My summer pre-sessional teaching at the University of Warwick (two summers) was with pre-MA students planning to enter degrees in Cultural Policy Studies and other arts-related subjects. What started out as a way to spend a summer in my hometown turned into one of the best teaching experiences of my career.
University of Victoria, BC, Canada
Over a period of four months, I carried out an external evaluation of curriculum for the EAP and General ESL programs. I reviewed program documentation, interviewed stakeholders and observed classes. My report outlined strengths and weaknesses of the current curricula, presented a revised six-level curriculum and provided custom materials to guide teachers in course development.
Trent University, Peterborough, ON, Canada
I worked at Trent for 12 years in various roles. As EAP Curriculum Coordinator, I oversaw the development and implementation of a a six-level EAP program and provided academic leadership to a team of 15–20 instructors. As EAP Instructor, I specialized in advanced-level reading, writing and study skills. As Academic Skills Instructor, I worked with domestic and international students on writing and study skills. As Lead Instructor in the Trent TESL Program, I co-delivered a 120-hour course leading to TESL Canada certification.
